What to Bring on Your Child’s First Day at Nursery

The first day of nursery is an exciting time for both you and your child. It’s a big milestone that marks the beginning of a new stage in your child’s life, and it’s natural to feel a little nervous or anxious about it. One way to help ease your worries is to make sure you’ve packed everything your child will need for their first day. Here are some essential items that are a good idea to bring for your first day at St. John’s Nursery, all in a bag that hopefully, your child can carry themselves.
- Extra clothes: Accidents and spills happen, so it’s a good idea to pack an extra set of clothes for your child. Make sure you include underwear or nappies, as well as socks, and shoes, and a spare outfit. We do sell uniform which can be helpful, so please get in touch if you’d like to order a t-shirt or sweatshirt from St. John’s.
- Comfort items: If your child has a favorite toy, blanket, or stuffed animal, be sure to bring it along. Having something familiar can help ease any anxiety they may feel. Please make sure that anything from home is labelled.
- Packed lunch and water bottle: We provide snacks for all sessions, whether that is AM or PM sessions. All children need to bring a packed lunch, as well as a bottle that can be refilled with water. Choose healthy options that your child enjoys and that won’t spoil easily.
- Nappies and wipes: If your child is not yet toilet-trained, make sure you bring enough nappies and wipes to last the day. Label them clearly with your child’s name. The nursery does have spares when needed.
- Sunscreen and hat: If your child will be spending time outside, it’s important to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Pack a hat and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. The nursery does have spare sunscreen, as long as you have given us permission to administer it.
- Indoor shoes: to help children to be as comfortable as possible with us, please make sure that children have a pair of indoor shoes, such as slippers. It helps them to be comfortable, as well as grow in confidence by taking their shoes on and off independantly.
- Medications: If your child needs to take any medication during the day, make sure you provide clear instructions to the nursery staff and pack the medication in a labeled container.
- A backpack or bag: Choose a backpack or bag that your child can carry easily, and label it with their name. This will help ensure that all of their belongings make it home at the end of the day.
- Important contact information: We will have your main emergency contact details from your registration forms, but something has changed, such as your mobile phone number, or someone else will be collecting your child, please let us know.
