Your Nursery needs you!
Ever thought about joining the Nursery Committee? Find out more about what it involves.
The Nursery Voluntary Management Committee
St John’s Nursery Group is a registered charity. It doesn’t operate to make a profit, and all surpluses generated go towards improving the equipment and environment and towards enhancing the stability of the nursery.
The Nursery is run by a Voluntary Management Committee made up of parents and parents of former nursery attendees. The Committee has a vital job – it’s responsible for the overall management and smooth running of the Nursery. It works closely with the Nursery Manager and staff to help with a variety of tasks from maintenance of the building to fundraising, from health and safety to helping with staff recruitment.
The Committee meets approximately six times during the school year, and is elected at the Annual General Meeting, which is usually held during September each year.
What kind of things are the Committee responsible for?
The work of the Committee is varied, worthwhile and often really good fun. You could be building new partnerships with other parents and professionals, coming up with new fundraising ideas, or getting exciting plans off the ground such as a new play feature in the garden.
But there are some regular jobs too – the three main roles on the Committee are Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary. The tasks can be shared between different parents so all the work need not fall on any one person.
Some of the areas the Committee is responsible for are:
- Assisting with recruitment of Nursery staff, paying salaries, and managing contracts of employment
- Developing business plans
- Managing the daily accounts
- Working with staff to ensure the Nursery follows health and safety, risk assessment, insurance and first aid guidance and procedures
The Committee is vital to the successful running of the Nursery, and getting involved is interesting and rewarding. We always welcome new members to the Committee as many hands make light work! And you don’t need any previous experience to make a difference.
There are lots of ways you can contribute to the Committee and you can choose to give as much or as little time as you can spare. We welcome new members for the Committee itself, but we also appreciate that sometimes parents simply want to help out when they can. Often this tends to be in the run up to a fundraising event where it all gets very hectic and exciting!
Just let us know if you are interested in finding out more about the Committee, or if you would like to help on an ad-hoc basis – just send us an email or pop in and see us at the Nursery. We look forward to hearing from you!
